This was my third Karin Slaughter book and one of her early books. She does write a good (if looooong) thriller. There were a few missteps, which made me look at the pub date (2003) because I don't think they'd happen today. She depicts a gay character in a very negatively stereotyped way. He was a minor character and there weren't many scenes, but they leapt out at me in their wrongness. And it was fine for others to mock him for said qualities. Maybe we have progressed a bit since then. She does write sympathetic characters, mostly. The male love interest/hero has a bad temper and is quick to judgement. I didn't like him much, but he is described in almost sexual terms and one assumes he has some kind of raw sexual appeal. The heart and soul of the story centers around Sara Linton, the medical examiner, who is smart, no nonsense and caring. She makes the read worthwhile. As for the plot, it could have been leaner, but all in all, a fairly gripping story.

This was not my favorite Karin Slaughter book. I think the pacing was slow and the crimes were average (compared to her other works). I read the Will Trent series first, which makes it hard for me to like some of the characters in the Grant County series. I don't even like Sara as much as I do in her other books. Jeffery is another one who, when compared to Will, falls short. I think I am going to just wait for the next Will Trent book. Hopefully that will be coming out soon.... hopefully.
