“Lena is a person who survives rather than lives her life — you could say she is dead and she doesn’t know it.”
Karin Slaughter is doing this again to me. She depicts one very long panic attack through a whole novel where all characters are barely hanging in there in the midst of some gnarly violent crimes. Everyone is messed up, everyone has a past, baggage and trauma, everyone is a human being that is broken but still continues somehow. Both criminals and cops don’t have their shit together which is very cathartic for me as a person that suffers from chronic anxiety. And catharsis is good.
I never considered crime mystery novels to be anything more than a cheap trill. Then Karin Slaughter started writing.

Slaughter is really torturing Lena, my god.
I liked this one more than the last, but these past two books aren’t necessarily what I’ve come to expect from Slaughter. I don’t know that I like the interpersonal relationships in this series.

I went back to continue this series and was excited to get back to it. But i think this one was just not her best. It was dark and graphic at times but the characters didn’t seem to pop like they normally do. They were just bland and the story didn’t propel me forward like it normally does for her books.
