I dislike every character, especially HATE Jeffery, the case isn't the main focus of the story, there isn't anything positive in any aspect of the story, the violence and negative emotions are excessive for me, and there is not a single adult character who is emotionally stable or able to conduct a healthy relationship. Also racism was brought up, but sidelined and sexism and victim blaming played a huge part in the story without being addressed as sexism. There is police brutality and stupidity. The case is solved not by clues, but by chance, it's just one guy reexamining a room and finding the right question to ask the right people. That's it, not really a build up of the case, just a lot of characters being terrible to each other and themselves.

Another good one from Karin Slaughter! Obsessed with this writer. I really enjoyed it, especially the interactions among the characters and the development over the series. I'm really concerned about Lena and where her character is going to go. I actually wonder if this is how people may react to such trauma.

I think I need to take a break from this series. I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the previous two. Lena just annoyed me, and I hated that Tessa got dragged into the mystery. It was just awful, and I'm not sure that I'm ready to read the next one. I also didn't love that the killer ended up being someone we've met before, it just didn't feel right or jive with what we knew about character. 3 out of 5 stars.

I think Slaughter creates a really intriguing mystery. Some parts are really hard to read (or listen to in this case). A lot of characters are really frustrating to read from. It felt like there were a lot of threads in this story, but they never felt meaningless. Sometimes I think mystery authors like to throw everything at a reader to overwhelm them with suspects or motives, but this felt like every detail or evidence had purpose.

Lena’s inability to get out of her own way is wildly frustrating. I don’t like Jeffrey. And yet, still a decent book with some surprises. Like the end.
