A decent collection of short stories in the world of Watership Down, the latter part being a follow up to the events of the original book that introduces fun new ideas into the mix like female rabbits taking charge! I love that Richard Adams was careful to correct the sexist tones of the rabbits in his original novel. But all in all most of the book seems rather pointless apart from the aforementioned latter half and it seemed like that was the part Adams really wanted to write.

What an odd book. If Watership Down is Lord of the Rings for rabbits, then Tales is its Silmarillion— down to the fact it feels like a posthumous release, even though it isn’t. The structure of this book is all but nonexistent. The majority revolves around sharing tales of El-Arairah (I actually preferred this section by a not insignificant margin) with a final hundred pages dedicated to short adventures taking place after the original novel, none of which really amount to much and some of which feature what feel like plot holes in the mythology. It all has the feel of a book cobbled together from rejected fables, chapters, and planning for a sequel. And yet it was intended to be in this form. All of this sounds overwhelmingly negative, but I also love History of Middle Earth, so I have no problems overlooking a rough product to mine it for nuggets about a world and story I adore. And there’s a lot of fun material in here. It’s just none of it sticks together. I’m okay with that. Others may not be.
