I enjoyed this the most when it was being a story, but it spends a lotttttt of its runtime as an advert for anarchy as an organizing principle for society. don't hate the advertisement, but that's not necessarily what I go to SFF for.

The author has a tough challenge with this book in making it informative about the concept of anarchy in practice without seeming overly didactic. They largely succeed at this - there are some points where the exposition is a little heavy-handed but that is sort of to be expected with a concept so misunderstood.

"If we need to tell ourselves there is a shiny silver city just over the next hill, we do so because we need the courage to keep walking and we need a direction to walk. Utopia should serve as more of a compass than a map. It tells us which way to walk. It doesn't tell us what will run across on the path and it doesn't tell us what it'll be like when we get there. It just says "we need to walk towards freedom." With freedom, of course, being something we give one another. It's the journey, not the goal that matters. The only purpose of the goal is to enrich the journey and give it direction. A hundred years ago anarchist Errico Malatesta said, 'the subject is not whether we accomplish Anarchism today, tomorrow, or within ten centuries, but that we walk towards Anarchism today, tomorrow, and always.'"

By the end, I LOVED this book, but I didn't always like it throughout. My main critique is the dialogue can be a little corny and unrealistic. Some aspects of the plot are too convenient as well, but those two critiques are common from me for fiction. I guess I should have mentioned that this review is coming from someone who usually reads nonfiction.

Otherwise, this book is incredible. It is informative and inspiring. He is so effective at shifting the reader's socialized ways of thinking. Anyone who has no idea how the people in an anarchist society would think should read this book and probably the rest of the Black Dawn Series.
