For a children's book published in 1900, it's pretty darn good: creative, adventurous though pretty tame.  Baum's intro indicates he was trying to address the shortcomings of Grimm-style fairytales as the default stories for kids, and Oz succeeds on that score.  I missed the time window to have read it to my kids, but I can see how it would be enjoyable for kids in the 4- to 8-year-old range.  Brooke Shields does a nice job as the narrator of this audio edition.

Such a cute little story!
lighthearted

thank you L. Frank Baum for writing this book so that we can enjoy gay witches doing musical theater a hundred years later

If a book as a preface saying it is pure entertainment and has no moral lesson or instruction.... oh boy, get ready to be moralized seven ways to Sunday. Still, it is a fun book, makes me want to go watch Tin Man again.
