RIP Werther, te habría encantado el concepto de poliamor.
El final de este libro VA DURÍSIMO. No solo porque sea Lotte quien le entregue la mismísima arma con la que se suicida sino porque el absoluto patán ni matarse en condiciones sabe... Patético hasta el final <3 Es que solo puedo darle cinco estrellas. Y mira que me costó engancharme, que al principio se me hacía muy pesado y casi me como las páginas del maldito FINAL en las que decide transcribir la poesía esta de Ossain que es un suplicio (perdón), y que digo yo que si quisiera leerla habría pues cogido ese libro en vez de este, pero en fin...
Se nota que Goethe vino a contarnos su tedtalk y aunque no comulgo con todo me gusta ese toque de los clásicos de "te vas a tener que leer por cojones lo que a mí me ha salido de los huevos escribir sea relevante literariamente/para la trama/para tu vida o no". Le da cierto encanto que las novelas comerciales de ahora ya no tienen.

I know things are not going well when I catch myself wishing the main character would hurry up and kill himself fairly early in my reading. Werther is a seminal text in the 'Woe is Me' School of over-educated under-employed workshy fops who go rustic, press pennies into the grubby hands of any peasant they see, fall in love with fifteen year-old girls already promised to another, weep all over the place and write melodramatic letters to their friend expounding on the unique condition of their pure unrequited love, and then mecifully shoot theirselves with their rival's pistol.
I could summon not a scrap of sympathy for this creepy wastrel and can only hope that Goethe wrote it for cash to fund his more serious works. I was about to give Flaubert's Madame Bovary a go this winter, but as I hear it takes inspiration from this dirge, I shall postpone.

Slow and dense at first, though always beautiful. It all culminates in a beautiful sequence and in a way, leaves you momentarily breathless. Ingenious really.

Ok, it’s kinda problematic that a lot of people have read this and gone “Werther is literally me”, but if you can look past that, this is actually a really good portrayal of an obsessive misanthrope.

Very beautiful and eloquent writing about the experience of a pure romantic. The lamentation gets a bit tedious towards the end by modern standards.
