Barbara Kingsolver is a master storyteller. Her ability to craft a  beautiful and heart wrenching story about a family, while simultaneously telling the story of the devastating damage colonialism and imperialism has wrecked on Africa, specifically the Congo, is unmatched. I learned a great deal, cried, even laughed, will be processing this book for some time.

The ending was so good I cannot express how much I love this book. The central messages communicated by Kingsolver are deep and honest and brutal, but also comforting in their own ways. So skillfully crafted, every sentence is thoughtful and intentional. The varying tones and styles used for all the different characters. The writing of the maturation of said characters, yet they still maintain their unique flair. Although ms Gillespie’s class is a waste on the actual AP Lit teaching front, I do enjoy her book selection it seems
