A great novella with an unexpected premise and outcome. Really heartwarming.

I'm glad that it didn't go the way I thought it would go and instead gave us a sweet friendship between Isabelle and Ralston with letters (WITH LETTERS!), makes the romance much sweeter when it happened.

If you liked [b:Ravishing the Heiress|13051602|Ravishing the Heiress (Fitzhugh Trilogy, #2)|Sherry Thomas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1326225990l/13051602._SY75_.jpg|18216417] and ended up feeling bad for Isabelle, this gives her her HEA.

The premise for this one is simple, if a bit unbelievable. At the end of the last novel, Isabelle rented a place to be close to Fitz, but he decided to stay with Millie. Isabelle comes back to her leased home to pick up one last thing when she runs into Ralston Fitzwilliam, who is basically the exact copy of Fitz except that he's got brown hair. So why not proposition him for one night of fantasy?

Except because this is Sherry Thomas, you know "one night of fantasy" turns into one night of shared grief, sexual tension, and the start of a lasting relationship. We don't regret reading this because, y'know, Sherry Thomas, but it wasn't our favorite of hers.

As this novella began, I wasn't sure I was going to like it given how Isabelle mistakes Ralston for Fitz but obviously I did and it was such a surprise as they each have their own grief to come to terms with in order to fall in love with each other.
Ralston sees in Isabelle a kindred spirit in that she seems unhappy, like he is, although he tries to put on a cheery face. Turns out his wife, who he loved, died 3 mos after they married when he was 22 and he's been a bit of a rolling stone ever since, travelling around the world as a cartographer, safe from being recruited for espionage as the heir to a dukedom. And Isabelle, who is obviously sad from losing Fitz is also still in her way grieving for her husband who she found happiness with.
We have cameos from Fitz and Millie who by coincidence decide to re-do their honeymoon in the Lake District and happen to check in to the same hotel as Isabelle and stumble upon her chatting happily with Ralston from a distance. And we see in this scene how happy Fitz and Millie are for her, which was really lovely.
The fact that Ralston is Fitz' doppelganger rears its ugly head in the end, and it's only right that Fitz plays a part in his and Isabelle's reconciliation.

How does Sherry Thomas continue to take tired romance tropes and seemingly unsympathetic characters and keep charming me with them? I don't know but I have to keep reading to find out

This was decent. It read a little far-fetched with the premise (that the hero is the spitting image of her lost Fitz) that made some of the drama towards the end a bit ridiculous.

[Spoiler alert for previous book] I was also annoyed with the heroine's actions in the previous book in this series, where she was harping after and getting angry at Fitz for liking (and then loving) his wife, when she talks about how she loved her life with her own husband and that they got along well. The hypocrisy!! That also might be due to the writing not giving her enough depth in the previous book.

Other than that, this was an okay read with a satisfying ending.

Really didn't think this novella would work because the premise is so out there (the hero in this looks almost exactly like the hero in another book), but it totally does, and Sherry Thomas does an incredibly amount of character building in a very small number of pages. I hope ST comes back to HR sometime in the future ;_;
