What do you do when you find yourself in a sticky situation with a messy outcome whichever way you turn and no apparent escape route? This story seems to unravel a sticky web resultant from a lot of different mistakes made by different people who were at once perhaps trying to do their best with their given situation while simultaneously perhaps never knowing how to do good in the first place. It was well paced and interesting to see what led each character to the end and how they all interconnected. So I never really knew what to expect or who to trust but it made for a fun and quick read.

I really wanted to like this book, to the point that I finished it when I probably should have abandoned it. For starters, I just could not love Lucky. She just seemed so naïve and honestly stupid the entire book, being used by everyone around her. Every decision she makes feels like the wrong one. She is made out to be this brilliant con woman, but I could not see it. She spent the entire book entirely dependent on others. I did not like her or care about her. As for the story itself, usually I love books that go back and forth between past and present. But the switches felt disjointed, and poorly timed. They happened too frequently, and often felt like they were interrupting the main plotline. And they did not make me like Lucky any more. As for the ending, it was way to fast, confusing, and did not feel like a resolution at all. There were so many things left up in the air, and it did not seem like Lucky had ended up any better off. Overall, this was not the book I had hoped it would be.
