I love a female-led con artist story, but Lucky didn't do it for me.
Lucky's father is a con artist who keeps the two of them on the move to avoid getting caught. She eventually gets together with a scamming boyfriend, and they commit a heist. After the heist, Lucky realizes she has a winning lottery ticket, but cashing the ticket means she'll get caught for her crimes. So, she tries hatching a plan to get the money from the lottery and stay out of prison and, in the process, learns a lot about herself and her family.
The book is relatively short and is easy to read. I finished it in about two days, but Lucky was naive and didn't have critical thinking skills, making it difficult to root for her. I wanted her to be smarter and confident.
There are a few twists and turns as you learn more about Lucky and her childhood that were compelling, but overall, the story was just fine.
Halfway through I ended having to skim through to the end of the book.

Another winner from Reese Witherspoon!
Lucky is a con artist who is on the run. Her father raised her and taught her everything she needed to know about it. She never knew her mother, and a part of her always wished she would meet her one day. When her boyfriend disappears in Vegas, suddenly, Lucky is wanted everywhere. Better yet, she buys a lottery ticket and ends up with the winning numbers. But how can she cash it in if she is on the run? How Lucky is she actually? Lucky is a fun story about a woman on the run while trying to find answers to questions she's had for a long time.
Here is another book that I read in one sitting! When I saw the length of the book, I was skeptical at first. How was this entire story supposed to fit in 230 pages? Once I started reading, I was so invested in the book that I didn't want it to end.
Stapley does an amazing job telling Lucky's story. She is lonely, and readers get to go into the past and get a glimpse of her childhood. She constantly moved from place to place, and the one time she made a friend, it didn't go to well for her. She grew up without a mother and we see the effect that this had on her. Lucky is one of those characters who you can't help but cheer for. Obviously, what she does is morally wrong, but she's such a wonderful character. She's strong, fierce, determined and smart.
The ending of the book felt a little rushed for me, but overall, I had the best time reading this book. If you're looking for a fun, easy and quick read, I highly recommend picking this one up.
Also, check out Stapley's previous novel, a fun summer thriller, The Last Resort!
