Yes okay I saw the twist a mile away but this book was SO enjoyable and I absolutely LOVED the writing. I felt like I slipped so easily back into being a fresh little 18 year old adult all over again.

I liked this book a good deal. I thought Natalie was an interesting character, although I think Fischer purposefully sketched rather than painted and that didn't always quite work for me. Sometimes it felt beautifully literary, but at other times it felt frustratingly vague. I think the story itself is quite simple in a way (I saw the twist coming but maybe that was the point, that it was obvious for the reader but not for the protagonist, I can't decide), but I like how realistic it comes across. I appreciate how some things are left a bit unresolved - that's life! Good coming-of-age structure that becomes a bit dual timeline-y toward the end in a somewhat abrupt change of time (in my opinion, mileage will obviously vary!).

I was actually so sucked in by this book. The way it is written was incredibly captivating for some reason. Over and over again I would highlight paragraphs that could stands as poems by themselves, and it was always such a curiou contrast to Natalie doubting her ability to write good poetry (whatever good poetry might be). Reading this book right  after having read We Do What We Do In The Dark - a book that has a vaguely similar premis to The Adult, I expected not to be easily wowed but I was SO wowed.
