A little dull in parts.

A compelling coming-of-age story of a VERY socially awkward young woman leaving her sheltered upbringing and falling in love with a mysterious older woman. Natalie is painfully anxious, consumed by self-doubts about her worth as a human being. She rehearses and second-guesses herself at every turn, comparing herself unfavorably to those around her. Fischer uses metaphors of nature – grass, flowers, leaves, sunsets – to viscerally evoke our protagonist’s deep loneliness and sense of unknowing as she struggles to find herself as an adult.

But what does it mean to be an adult? Is it someone who has reached the age of 18? Someone who can shop independently for groceries? Someone who knows herself, and what she wants to “be” in life? Someone who accepts responsibility for her decisions? Who tells the truth? And, by any of these measures, who in this story is a true adult?

Fischer’s writing is sharp, marred only by moments when her MFA literary training intrudes to break the moment with heavy-handed metaphors. Overall, an impressive and realistic debut novel.

The author’s writing put me right into in the shoes, mind, and heart of Natalie, and perfectly gripped me in the insecurity and unsure-ness of young love, or rather, infatuation.  Reading with an adults perspective certainly caused me to judge and distrust Nora for pursuing Natalie, but Natalie’s innocence and love for her had me rooting for them anyways.  The whole thing was tender and gut wrenching in the best of ways.

Actually so mad this book is over wtf I want more

Thank you @algonquinbooks for the copy of The Adult by Bronwyn Fisher. This book is out now. This was a great debut book. It is an LGBTQ coming of age set on campus. Fisher sets such a good tone of tension all around between the characters. It made me feel uncomfortable for Natalie as well as remembering that awkward phase of being on the brink of adulthood at 18. This. Ok was well written and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Nora is a freshman in college where she meets Nora, an older woman. We don’t know how much older, but established with a house and career. Nora has a secret that Natalie is trying to navigate while also discovering who she is as a person.
