This does a good job on a nuts and bolts level of exciting storytelling. It keeps you turning pages to find out what happens next but I was hoping for a bit more substance.
There's a lot of researched detail about how undersea rescue works in real life, maybe at the cost of the story's pace. But I think better character material would have made the story more gripping, not this amount of technical realism.
Newman's skill is clearly with plotting and action rather than writing characters. The people here are broad types and we are asked to feel for them only by pulls of the most obvious heart strings.
This is a good, just not exceptional, thriller. I am disappointed only because some reviews had led me to believe it would be better.

From the very first chapter, this book had my heart racing as it took me on a wild, unpredictable ride. The tension starts high and keeps climbing until the very end. As someone who is claustrophobic, I found the description of the group having only a small air pocket while surrounded by water absolutely nerve-wracking.
Overall, I loved this book and highly recommend it. But don’t read it before getting on a plane—or even while you're on one!
