calling it here (at ~80% through) because my audiobooks.com free trial is almost up. possibly i will try and finish it at some point but i don't wanna have to drag myself thru it when there r so many other books to be reading  😬

here's my thoughts from as far as i got:
this book is both more YA and more dark than sabriel in some rlly weird ways that i didn’t remember.
like, one protagonist has these consistent suicidal ideations, including the entire first chapter of the book in which she is 14? you see the other protagonist get PTSD and try to cope with it and then (seem to) accidentally straight up murder some of his own guards while he’s going about an act of childish rebellion? there’s this refugee crisis subplot that turns into a refugee GENOCIDE plot??? SOME DARK SHIT!!

but then it’s also more YA in that its this broader cast of characters who start out much younger and have a much more sprawling plot that takes a bit to ramp up. whereas sabriel was just immediately thrown into the action and no time was wasted - it felt almost more like a Tale, a Legend, etc, this super crystalized story that hits the necessary beats and is about this central special figure with really interesting specific powers. lirael felt a lot less focused in a way that made it harder to get into tbh. the high point for me was at the beginning when
you know it’s sabriel and touchstone in the paperwing :’)

Parts of this were great, but I found it very slow to get going, and then it didn't really resolve as it continues in Abhorsen.
