Kiara Johnson, a 17-year-old East Oakland resident, struggles to make ends meet and keep it together for herself and her older brother, Marcus, who is unable to hold down a job.

This is a story of survival. The writing style is extraordinary, feeling Kia's emotions and hearing her voice throughout the book.  The dehumanization of people by the police department and the justice system is horrifying. Nightcrawling deals with deep issues such as poverty, sex work, police brutality, sexual abuse, and racial and gender inequality.

Leila Mottley is a terrific young author and I admire the way she has written this book.

TW: sex-work, prostitution, sexual assault, addiction, police brutality, child negligence, suicide attempt, drug use, alcohol use, abuse of power, intimidation, death of a child, human trafficking.

I was very impressed with Leila Mottley’s debut novel. It is a heart-wrenching tale of a young girl doing everything she can to keep her family (and found family) safe, despite the sacrifices she herself has to make, and the failings of those who should have protected her. Mottley’s descriptions and prose were lyrical, and kept me reading through difficult content.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! Wow. This is such an emotional, heartbreaking story. A young girl having to grow up too soon and face incredible hardship. Making the tough choices, to take care of herself and those around her. This one is going to stick with me for s while. Please review trigger warnings before reading.

Thank you to NetGalley, Leila Mottley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book, in exchange for an honest review!

I was absolutely engrossed in this book from the very beginning. It is heartbreakingly beautiful, and the fact that it's Leila Mottley's debut novel at only 17 makes it even more amazing! I'm excited to see what else she releases in the future!
