A lovely and heartbreaking book following a young girl who's only ever known life on her small island. She doesn't know where she's from, nor who her parents were, but she knows the man who taught her to fish, what to do in case of a storm, and how to live on their small island. And she knows the kind woman on the mainland who is her friend. But everyone must come from somewhere, and surely there's a reason why everyone else on the mainland acts so hostile towards her? When the man comes to begin poking around on the island where no one goes, she decides that she's going to get answers, even if she has to find them herself.

This book was so special and sweet and will have you thinking about the meaning of family and looking like these emojis: 🥺🥰.

Crow is an extremely likable character to follow and read about and I loved her journey and her relationship with Osh and Miss Maggie. She’s still only twelve when the book ends, and I would definitely read more books about her if the author decides to write more (please). Her adventurous spirit, her resourcefulness, her love for others, her growth over the story—I just loved it all.

If you want a memorable middle grade book that you can read in a day, this is a great choice. I read it for my book club and we had a lovely discussion about it. I love dipping my toes into middle grade books every now and then!
