Sadie and Nathan Hunt have always had the perfect marriage. Really, that's how people introduce them, and Sadie has always believed that they lived up to it. Until lately. Lately, Nathan isn't the husband that he's always been, and Sadie is left feeling alone and confused. When new neighbor Finn Cohen moves in, he and Sadie begin spending time together. A lot of time. Before long, Sadie is finding Nathan's distance a little more tolerable, but when lines begin to blur, deciding what matters most will take everything she has.
This book absolutely wrung me out. I mean, the emotions, people. It was like a roller coaster; you're hanging on for dear life, but can't stop the ride because it's that thrilling, that enthralling. That's what reading SLIP OF THE TONGUE was like for me.
I had read previous books by author Jessica Hawkins, and enjoyed them, so was really looking forward to this story. Forbidden romance, possible love triangle, what wasn't to like? Oh.My.Goodness, I am telling you, this book. I got immediately and completely sucked in, and believe me when I tell you that I read later than I have in forever just so that I could finish this book, because I could not put it down.
The characters are complex in SLIP OF THE TONGUE; Jessica has done a great job of creating a realistically possible situation, along with characters that seem more human and easier to relate to than not. There were elements that I liked and did not like in Sadie, Nathan, and Finn, things that made it understandable, though not acceptable, regarding the choices that they made. Some of my favorite characters were actually supporting ones, especially Sadie's boss, Amelia, and Sadie's brother, Andrew, and niece, Bell (she was hoot; she'll be kicking butt and taking names in a few years, bet on it).
SLIP OF THE TONGUE is a book that I had waited for with anticipation, and I can happily say that it does not disappoint. This book is an emotional, realistic, sometimes gritty read, and gets a solid 4.5 stars from me. I look forward to reading more from Jessica in the near future, and wouldn't mind seeing Andrew get his own story. Grab this one and read it. I feel certain that you will not regret it.

I feel like this needs to be said. I hate love triangles and I'm not a fan of cheating, but I loved this book. I felt for all of the characters in the situation they're in. They were all so real, with viable issues and feelings and I felt this was one of the most realistic, relateable books I've read. I could see real people being in these situations.

Update: read this in 2023 and um, idk what I was thinking. I love Jessica Hawkins' writing but this isn't it at all. Sadie is a complete disaster, never once says sorry to her husband for cheating on him repeatedly and the end is so unrealistic that it's laughable. Fuuuuck.

Was this book good?
Well, what does it tell you that right after reading it, I bought everything else Jessica Hawkins has ever read and devoured her words like a starving animal? Maybe that last sentence was unnecessarily creepy, but you get the idea.
Just…

So, this was not at all what I expected. Given the summary, I fully believed I’d be rooting for one particular couple, and the opposite happened. Don’t you love that? I love, love, love when authors surprise me – especially New Adult authors. It’s a genre that often relies on routine plots, and Jessica Hawkins is anything but routine in her writing and imagining.
Slip of the Tongue is about Sadie Hunt. She’s your typical New York girl – living in Manhattan with her husband Nate, working for a PR firm and struggling with the idea of growing up and moving on. Worse, her husband – once loving, sexual and sweet – has turned into a ghost overnight. Cold, mono-syllabic and withdrawn, Nate has taken his love away from Sadie – something she can’t understand and can’t bear. He won’t discuss it with her, leaving her to draw her own conclusions.
Enter a new neighbor, stage left.
Finn Cohen is the opposite of Nate. He wants Sadie. Badly. He seems to be willing to do anything to be with her – and in her current mindset, it’s very, very tough for Sadie to resist.
Does she?
You’ll have to read to find out, but it’s obvious from most of Hawkins’ writing that she is fascinated by cheating, and it’s no different here. I love that she focuses on this particular part of relationships – monogamy, finding the ‘one’, marriage, affairs, etc – because so many authors really shy away from it. On GoodReads, most novels that deal with cheating have terrible reviews. It’s not something many readers can stomach. I’m normally one of them actually. For instance, Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens is super popular and the entire thing infuriated me. Mainly because of the main character.
Sadie was different. I really felt for her. She seemed like a genuinely good person who just can’t help herself / nor figure out what the hell happened to her life. She struggles with her decisions, knowing that what she’s doing is wrong – but in the end, she tries to do the right thing. She tries to give everyone what they want.
Naturally, she can’t. But she still tries, and that means something to me. Her marriage with Nate felt very real to me – as were the reasons behind his sudden change of heart. How the little things DO add up. How it can be the smallest thing, but in a marriage – it can mean disaster.
Regardless of small quibbles (the ending wraps up too quickly for me), I just loved, loved, love this. I’ve read it twice. Go and give Jessica Hawkins the fame she deserves! Go, go, go!

I struggled with this one. It took me soo long to get into it i actually put it down and came back to it a couple of weeks later. There was nothing wrong with the story, it was just a bit slow paced for me and i sometimea struggle with books where the main subject matter is cheating.
Okay. Let me first say what bothered me and then I will tell you what I enjoyed about this book, because I did thoroughly enjoy this book. I have no issues with love triangles. Let me just say that first of all. I do not generally seek out books that involve cheating, but I do not have trouble reading them. However, I am not a fan of the woman in this book. I felt I could not connect with Sadie's character. I felt that there were so many other options out there and I felt she was selfish in her behaviors. What I did like? I loved the angst in this story. I don't know how many times I gasped while reading this book. I also loved the men in this story. I found it impossible to decide which one I thought Sadie should choose. At one point, I was so angry with her, that I felt she didn't deserve either one and actually maybe she didn't. I also loved how real and raw this story is. I think even though I did not like all the decisions made and the personality of the characters, I felt they were real and I felt the story was real. If you are looking for a story that will hit you hard with angst and drama, this is for you. It is a really enjoyable read.
Easiest 5-star rating ever!
I was enchanted by the spell that Jessica put on me and didn't put this book down until I finished. I have never seen so many twists and turns in a story lead to such beautiful and heart-breaking moments. Jessica does not disappoint at all with this book. I was on edge the entire time reading this book! I fell hopelessly in love with the characters in this book--I felt like I was with Sadie throughout her journey. I lived what she lived, felt what she felt (I wish!) and thought what she thought.
Sadie was at a point in her marriage where she began to feel lonely. Her once doting husband, Nathan, suddenly quit being affectionate and Sadie felt abandoned in her marriage.
Finn moves into the apartment across the hall. A casual encounter in the hall with Sadie sends sparks flying. The further away Nathan and Sadie grow, the more Sadie starts to feel that with Finn is the right place for her.
It is an emotional roller-coaster that you’ll want to fasten your seat-belt and hold on tight for! You’ll never see the next flip coming or what is awaiting you around the bend.

When I first started this, I loved it but the main female character started to drive me absolutely nuts. If you can get past that, it's a good book but she personally just drove me insane.

I really enjoyed this story but I felt like it was a little drawn out.
