The only thing I loved completely in this book was the illustrations, which were stunning.

The writing on the other hand could have used more editing before publishing. Most of the sections on Gods and Goddesses were 1) filled with too much filler words. Like whole paragraphs of the author personifying that god’s thoughts instead of writing actual information about them. And 2) the myths were inaccurate!! The most inaccurate thing was every time the author wrote that Zeus married another woman while being married to Hera when she meant that he either raped or slept with the girl. ZEUS DID NOT HAVE MULTIPLE WIVES and Zeus did not sleep with all those women because he “fell in love with them” it was because he was a major asshole!! And the retelling of Poseidon and Medusa was seriously creepy and wrong. Poseidon did not see Medusa and fall in love with her scales! Poseidon raped Medusa in Athena’s temple when she was still a beautiful mortal and then Athena blamed Medusa and turned her into a monster. It really disgusted me to see that myth attempted to be turned into a love story. If I wanted Greek Myths that are sanitized and lovey dovey I would have watched Disney’s Hercules. I wanted to learn actual Greek myths, which this book didn’t do for me. Instead this book has historical fiction myths loosely based of the real myths.

I really wanted to love this book because it looked so pretty but couldn’t get over the actual content of the book-which was sparse. Guess that’s why they say don’t judge a book by its cover! It was still enjoyable to read because I had fun taking a red sharpie and crossing out everything wrong and writing in the actual myth lol.

Donna Jo Napoli's storytelling continues to be a delight, even with these very familiar stories felt fresh.

Fact checking my favorite webcomics :)

First and foremost, as someone who had a somewhat understanding of Greek mythology (studied it in high school and college 20+yrs ago), I found the storytelling interesting but somewhat lacking in depth. I realize that this book was primarily meant for children but I think the author could have been more accurate without getting into the nitty, gritty details of the Gods supposed behavior. Because let's be honest, most of the Gods were a bunch of sex crazed horn dogs but I think their stories could have been better told without turning the book into something inappropriate for children.

On another note, the illustrations were beautiful. Reading this book has made me want to continue my refresher course on Greek mythology but I will be looking for something that delves more into the Gods behavior as well as a better assessment of the way that Greek mythology has really been recorded.

Five stars for the illustrations, three for the stories.

Tapi edisinya sangat lux, kertas licin, hardcover, ilustrasi cantique. Sangat pantas untuk dikoleksi.

Imho, kl yg norse myth, aku lbh suka versi Neil Gaiman, greek myth ini aku lbh suka versi edannya Percy Jackson.
