I don’t care about Deacon and other gripes
I like this series, I do, but it’s just kind of annoying having to read Deacon’s chapters. He is a character that I care about which makes reading his chapters tedious and every time I get to them I slow my reading and lose interest. I don’t understand how we are supposed to suddenly care about his story. I understand that he has a top secret plan that is supposed to drive the plot forward but I honestly don’t care about him or his relationship with Elijah. If a new POV had to be introduced I would much rather read about Tylendel. Tylendel is a character that we’ve gotten to know since the beginning and is more compelling to read about. I’ve been skimming Deacon’s chapters because I simply don’t care. I would like the focus to remain on Noel and Theoden, and particularly on how their relationship with each other goes. That brings me to a plot point that bothers me. This book has become bogged down with characters and there’s a lot going that it distracts from the characters you actually like. I wished that the focus remained simply on Noel and his journey because as readers we’ve connected to him and have learned this world through his eyes. Also, in the first book we got to see Noel and Theoden’s relationship build together but no their storylines don’t interact much and it’s like they’re merely co-existing. I fully understand that this not a romance but this series started with them so I wish there was more to anchor the reader to their relationship. Overall, I enjoy reading about Noel’s journey and his brothers and Theoden. Anytime I read their chapters, I read with a lot of momentum and attention. I just wish there was more of them and less Deacon. Also, I can see that Dante is becoming a prominent character but I am largely indifferent to him. I would like a return to the simplicity of the first book but I know that we are not going to get that, unfortunately.

Not for everyone as it gets pretty graphic and explicit
