4.5 stars.

I just read this book bascially in one sitting. (I read 40 pages before I got into it)

It was really, good. It has me hooked at the beginning.

I will talk more about this later on. (:

Good, but it is so close to the Unwind books in my mind that I'm reading in devour mode instead of savor mode. Snail Mail book club winter trilogy. Kind of making me all meta...

Four solid stars, though the cover deserves the highest rating - gorgeous!
The book was pretty original and offbeat, with interesting characters and gripping plot, but sometimes the story went slow and difficult to read, so I had to take away one star. Still - highly recommended!

I looked forward to this book for a very long time. I waited and waited with anticipation for it to come out and I bought it the day it did.
I was not disappointed.

Being in University, I don't have as much (if any at all some weeks) time to read books for pleasure..
But I made this book my one to read when I did have a free moment.

This book has a very unique concept.
Every child is born with 2 souls - 1 dominant and 1 recessive.. the recessive one is the one that would 'usually' fade away. But in those special cases when it doesn't fade, the person is called a Hybrid.
The book never fully divulges why Hybrid's are dangerous.. I want to know more of why the government wants its citizens to believe in this.

I loved Eva and Ryan. Their 'love story' didn't take front and centre in this novel. Which for a ya book, is rare. None of this "insta-love" and that made me like this book even more.

I found myself feeling sorry for Cal, Jamie, and Sally. I wanted to reverse their fates and operations.

I liked Kat Zhang's writing.

I can't really think of a whole review to write at this moment.

I am excited for what happens in the next book!!

Eva and Addie are two souls who share one body--though Eva lost the ability to control that body long ago. They are called a "hybrid"--which are outcasts in society and hunted down and sent to government facilities. People are only supposed to have one soul, after all...but Eva and Addie's body never settled.

They try to hide the fact that they are hybrid, but soon enough they are found out and shipped off to an institution where they meet several other kids like themselves. But something sinister is happening there...and Addie and Eva want out.

I had high hopes going into this book, and it was somewhat different than I expected. It was unique, but at the same time I came away from it feeling I had read this tale before.

The novel is told through the first person perspective of Eva, who is the "submissive" soul in the body she shares with Addie. (I'm not even sure what to call them, really...sisters doesn't seem quite right? Maybe Soul Sisters. Heh.) Because Addie is the one who puts on the public face and controls the body, Eva is essentially trapped. She can think and speak to Addie in their mind, but that's about all she's able to do.

Since Eva was the one narrating, I didn't get to know Addie at all. They are the same body, but two entirely different people. Characterization in general was weak in this novel. I don't understand how Addie became the "dominant" soul, when she seems so meek and introverted compared to Eva. I wish this novel would have been told in rotating chapters from each girl...I would have enjoyed knowing Addie's true feelings about everything that was going on.

Once the story unfolded inside the Nornand facility, then it got kind of predictable.
SpoilerDystopian with a giant government conspiracy?
Definitely been there before.

The part that was most confusing to me--how did the issue of a body sharing two souls even happen? Obviously the book is set in our world, at some point in the future...but some event must have occurred to make such a weird thing come about? This topic was not even broached and it's something I would have liked to see.

I'm glad I read the book, but I wish it would have been a bit more explosive and less predictable.

What it's about: A world in which one body contains two souls - hybrids. Addie has a secret, that her other soul Eva is still alive, and that could get them into terrible danger. After being shipped away to a psychiatric hospital to help 'cure' Addie and get rid of Eva, they both have to find a way to escape, before it's too late.

What I thought: What's Left of Me is a fantastic opening novel in the Hybrid Chronicles. We see the world through Eva's eyes, watching as Addie controls everything they say and do. We feel Eva's imprisonment as much as her, until she begins to learn how to control again. We feel the pain they both feel, the guilt and the anger too. Kat Zhang has done an amazing job of making us feel for her characters, placing us into their world. All of these individual souls are relatable to everyone, each in their own way. I cheered when they had a small victory and held my breath when they were in danger. This world of hybrids that Kat Zhang has created is wonderful, down to the last detail, apart from the soul killing of course.

Now go on down to your local bookstore and grab yourself a copy!

The good: I love the fact that Kat Zhang has created so many characters, each with different personalities, yet has put two of these in one body. This idea of hybrids really intrigues me!

The bad: I found it somewhat confusing at some points, with the two souls having different names, it was hard keeping up sometimes.

Rating: 5 bookstacks

it is very slowly that the author gives out clues to what is going on in the dystopian tale... I definitely feel that I need to read the next one to find out more about why things have happened the way that they have...
