I liked the story, although it took me a couple of goes to get the ending. But that's probably because I was listening to it instead of reading it. Detan's character grew on me as I learned more about him. If I was reading this, I would've rated it 3 stars. The extra star comes from the GraphicAudio production. Man, I just love their works. And this production has the added plus of Chris Genebach voicing Detan.

This one was a little too slow for my taste, and there's a possibility I wouldn't have finished it if the audiobook wasn't already available. Things really picked up after the halfway point, starting with a really stellar fight scene (a two-woman brawl that was so messy and well done that I would have clapped if that wouldn't have been weird). From there, we had a high-stakes chase / stealthy sneak, we learned significantly more about the magic and Detan's hold on it, a great use of disguises/impersonation, and a very clever and unusual final confrontation.

This is the kind of book that I would love as a video game: unique city structure, complicated traversal, a series of conflicting goals and paths. If it wasn't for the slow start, I would have absolutely loved it. As it stands, I will probably still be picking up the second book at some future time.

This book was so fun! Very similar vibes to Mistborn Era 2, but a completely different story and characters. The concept of sel and sel-sensitives is so cool and creative. Detan and Tibs are such a hilarious and fun duo, perfectly matched as they scam their way across the Scorched continent. The mystery woven throughout the story was fun, and the humour was delightful enough to keep the darker themes and undertones from overwhelming the story - and man, the backstory is dark.

This is Megan O’Keefe’s first book, and I really enjoyed it! I also love seeing how much she’s clearly grown as an author since this first book. Excited for more!!
