In a fit of whimsy, I hereby announce I will give everyone five stars, but the reviews may not reflect it.
I listened to the audio of this but found myself drifting off a lot as I listened. This is very likely a "me thing", as I did enjoy the bits I focused on. I find with audiobooks that a lot of worldbuilding tends to set my mind thinking about other things (usually work). Maybe someday I'll give the print a try, it definitely was entertaining in when I was switched on.

The world-building in this book is not quite intriguing. However, there are a couple of good elements. I'm gonna give the second book a try.

Set in a steampunk world just beyond the scorch, a merciless realm of desert and heat. Only islands remain and airships, powered by the elusive selium transverse the crude remnants of a civilization on the brink of collapse. Selium is a very strange gas, incredibly light and with powers that give those that are sel-sensitive the ability to perform certain types of magic.
In Aransa we meet the ne'er-do-well of our tale Detan Honding a con man and whose roguish charm keeps him and his sidekick Tibs out of jail, but only barely. His sparring partner is Ripka Leshe, a watch-captain who realizes she and Detan have a common goal — one that involves the city's ongoing political machinations, particularly the rise of General Thratia Ganal, fondly known as the throat slitter – and with good reason! Forming an uneasy alliance, the crook and the cop have a swashbuckling plan to swipe the Larkspur, the most magnificent airship in the Scorched. Along the way, we meet Pelkaia. Pelkaia is sel sensitive. Most people refer to her as a doppelganger but she prefers to be known as an illusionist.
It's a fun story well told with plenty of twists with 2 more in the series to follow of this interesting world.

It took me a while, about half-way through, to get into it. Once it got rolling, I buzzed through it. The author builds a very detailed world, and has made very well-drawn characters to populate it. Definitely worth the read, and I can't wait to read the next!
