Pi Patel grew up in India where his family ran a zoo. When life became too dangerous Pi's family decided to sell the animals and catch a ship to Canada. When the ship sinks on the way Pi escapes on a life boat.

Problems arise immediately when Pi realizes there is a hyena, a zebra, and orangutan on the boat with him. Pi is sure that is all the animals that could have made it on board, but he was mistaken. There was also a tiger on board.

As Pi lives his life trying to get rescued he must learn to tame the tiger. Not only is the tiger dangerous, it also needs fed, and cleaned up after. Throughout the book we learn of Pi's life before, during, and after his ordeal on the lifeboat.

The book talks a lot about Pi's religious journeys and learning who he was. Pi talks about life and the balance of survival and keeping your morals in tact.

The book was really captivating, especially from the ship wreck moment. Just a couple of pages in the end turned everything over and left me wondering. Definitely recommend, if you’re looking for something adventurous and a bit dark.

This book was very interesting. I enjoyed the beginning but the farther I got the darker and more gruesome it went. I can understand how this reflects the descent of the mind as a survivor stranded on the ocean will do anything just to live but it was very hard to read. The end is very disturbing and I skimmed over most of the second story Pi tells.

It is truly an interesting book but please be aware of the content warnings and go in expecting some weird, challenging and dark things.

Another note is I did not enjoy or appreciate how this book portrayed religion or Christianity. It seems to be written by someone who has studied religion form the outside but never been apart of it and does not understand it nor believe in God.

I was expecting more. I was struggling while reading this, I have a vivid imagination and this book has so much violence, blood, death and so many disgusting details that were very hard to get through. The ending is what saves this book for me, it left room for further thinking and reflecting. I like his view of religion. I didn't like the writing. Overall it was an solid read, I enjoyed more the ideas I got from this book and the themes, would love to discuss that with someone
