I really loved the story but sometimes the author described everything in too much detail

This book was so good I started reading it after the fire at the church at Notre Dame I always wanted to read it but kept putting it off, the fire kind of kick-started my passion to want to read it. Im happy that I did it seems to be a trend with me books that I put off reading end up being the best books. The book started off slow but only because the author really set interest in describing the architecture and structures of the majority of the churches and buildings of the city. There was a lot of character development and little details that frustrated me at first but I appreciate now. It took me a long time to get through the book because of the slow start to the story but once it picked up speed it was so interesting. I'm happy I finally got around the reading this book. I enjoyed the plot twists and turns and how everything finished up nicely.

26 Books Challenge - A book that was written more than 100 years ago. Not the first time I've read it, always worth another look. Probably the first book I read that outlined how cruel people can be, both casually and deliberately.

I wanted to like it more than I did. Reading Les Miserables was a transformative experience for me and it ranks in the top bracket of my greatest of the “great works of literature” list, flanked by War and Peace and Moby Dick. I was bound to be disappointed by Victor Hugo’s earlier work after reading his magnum opus. I felt the same when I read Anna Karenina after War and Peace. Don’t get me wrong. It is a good book and there is a lot to love about it, but I think what bothered me the most was how unformed the character of Esmerelda is. Her part in the narrative merely requires her to serve as an object of lust for the male characters. She has no agency and not much of a personality. That sort of thing bothers me.

This story will always have a special place in my heart. I loved the Disney movie, and decided to read this book. It was a beautiful love letter to gothic architecture, and brings back the majesty of the Notre Dame Cathedral. Also, Victor Hugo, are you ok? Why did everyone die?
