LOVED how this writer went about this topic- you really have to read this front to back to see why these women were so important and impactful, also illuminating various opinions despite being put in similar positions. I did think the ordering of sections got a tad confusing for me to remember which gal had what happen but if I did a formal study that wouldn’t be an issue in the slightest. Long story short - GOOD STUFF

I enjoyed following the three featured women through their unique business decisions—even more than reading biographical details. Satow does a great job painting the decadence and intentionality of department stores (alas, a by-gone era) and tracing the trajectory of retailing over to discount stores and malls. I would have loved to read more about the big picture, especially how urban planning and the rise of cars affected American fashion and it seems Satow has a thesis about that somewhere in there. At times, the book was a bit tedious.

Super interesting but I do wish the structure of the book had been a bit different. An in depth case study on each woman rather than bouncing back and forth between women and time periods would have been more comprehensible I think. But some themes did overlap so I understand why it was told the way it was

This book was informative and you can tell the author was passionate about the subject. I think the book could have benefitted from more in depth exploration into each woman rather than what what we got.
