My love for the wendigo / skinwalker tale has always been immense. That is no different here. Mimicking people physically and vocally, attempting to puppet and control. This book is creepy as fuck, man. The book itself might've just been a tad long. Highly recommend though.

Absolutely loved this and it's going to stick with me for a while. I highly recommend that you listen to the audiobook version because the narrator doing the different voices I think created 85% of the creepy factor. The story itself was probably pretty creepy on its own, but the VOICES! 😳😳😳 If you had told me prior to this year that I would enjoy and recommend an audiobook over reading I'd have said you were delusional, but here we are! Narration is 4.5*

EDIT (01/16/25): docking my rating a star because I’ve learned that a lot of the indigenous rep was done poorly and based on stereotypes that I hadn’t picked up on when I listened to it a while back.  Examples of said stereotypes are the indigenous characters only being there to:

• save the day
• help the white mc
• give wisdom/advice

I’m going to do my best to be more conscientious about these things in future books I read and if I’m unsure, look into it before I rate it!

Note: i listened to the audiobook and definitely recommend going this route

I really really enjoyed this book!! So unsettling and spooky from the very beginning but not TOO much that it feels like there’s nothing left to discover or anticipate. You can definitely feel the passion and love the author put into this work.

The only thing is that I feel like it was a tad too long and Part 4 could have been significantly shorter (it felt like it dragged quite a bit in some areas of this part). There were also some not great plot points that either didn’t really make sense or never had any payoff.

So while not perfect, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it’s (so far) the first horror book I’ve read to get me so unsettled and creeped out.

This really grabbed me for the first 60% or so of the book, but the ending was lacklustre. It had the potential, but it died off closer to the end.
