Stolen Tongues had me on edge from the very beginning. By the time I was 15% in, I was already getting goosebumps, and they didn’t stop coming in waves throughout the entire book. As someone who’s been creeped out by this type of monster since childhood, I can confidently say this book was exactly what I was hoping for. It pulled me in and kept me hooked, and I honestly would have finished it in a single sitting if I hadn’t accidentally fallen asleep at 2am.
The writing style worked really well for me. The story was presented in a way that only added to the growing sense of dread and anticipation. Some readers seem to have issues with the repetition in the storytelling, but for me, it actually heightened the tension and kept me anxious for what would come next. It wasn’t a distraction—it was part of what made the atmosphere so tense and immersive.
That said, I’m aware there’s some controversy surrounding the author and whether they had permission to tell this story, but I’m not fully sure about the details of that issue. For me, it didn’t detract from the experience, but it’s worth mentioning for those who might be concerned.
Overall, I really enjoyed Stolen Tongues. It delivered the horror I was looking for, and I’ll be thinking about it for a while.

A couple heads to a remote cabin for a romantic getaway, but an evil entity follows them home. This is quite honestly one of the worst books I've read and it was incredibly disappointing given this is based off an award winning creepypasta short story. It wasn't scary, the writer ran out of ideas and tried to keep extending the story, and frankly it just didn't make any sense. The "twist" was one of the most anti climatic things ever.
At the end of the story, the author (a white man) writes an additional chapter on how people like him need to be careful writing American Indian characters/culture/ "folklore" because it's really easy to write in an exploitative way... and then said he decided to write it anyway. And guess what, definitely read as exploitative. Some time after he wrote a long post on Reddit to address this controversy and not only defended his decision, but wrote a prequel novel from an American Indian's POV. So, doubled down on his mistake.

Look. THE WORST part about this book is the first chapter, the bit about the parrot is good. In fact there is effective horror sprinkled through the story in tiny crumbs. Too bad the plot is horrible (one of the main characters is like soooooooo dark because her mother had a miscarriage when she was little and that’s why she’s a target) and the characters are even worse! On top of that the author goes out of his way to write about how important Native American characters are while writing the most flat depictions I’ve seen in a while. Like zoinks scoob. Would have left no stars if I could. Not worth my time your time or anyone’s time
