Started out really good but got worse and worse

I found myself going back and forth between a 3 and 4-star review. But I realized it was more about the audio experience than the book itself, so I'm leaning towards a 3-star rating.

"Stolen Tongues" by Felix Blackwell sets up an interesting blend of horror and mystery, drawing readers in with its eerie atmosphere and unexpected plot twists.

However, the book's portrayal of non-white and female characters leaves something to be desired. These characters come across as somewhat one-dimensional and stereotypical, which might disappoint those looking for more depth and authenticity.

One aspect I personally enjoyed was experiencing the story through the audiobook format, which added an extra layer of immersion and heightened the suspenseful mood.

Overall, while "Stolen Tongues" presents a promising concept, it falls short in its character development, especially in terms of diversity. Nonetheless, it remains a compelling read, particularly for fans of immersive audio experiences.

4.5 stars!
I know some of the reviews say that it gets a little drawn out, but honestly, a lot of books do that. I thought this book did a good job with the pacing and continued to be scary right up to the end!

And speaking of the end, I really appreciate the lengths the author went through to keep his Native characters and folklore inoffensive and away from stereotypes. There's a whole blurb about it at the end of the book.
Spoiler I kept telling myself "Oh well, this is obviously a Wendigo" but you know what? The scariness remained unnamed. Not evil, not good, and explained in a way that encompasses Indigenous People's beliefs and stories.
I'm not Native myself, and I appreciate how this white, male author explains how he dealt with trying to write these characters. So, +500 points for him!

I wish our library would get more published r/nosleep or creepypasta books! There is some fabulous horror being written online that I wish was more accessible and on library shelves for everyone!

I really loved this concept and the idea of this. I did find myself getting a little bored through the middle, so I think it could have been a little shorter. However, this could very much be because I listened to it on audio and had a lot of other stuff on my mind. I definitely want to reread this one physically, I think physically reading it would make it a much spookier read!
