A Creepy Concept Gone Round in Circles with a Side of Yikes
Stolen Tongues started out with such a cool premise—creepy creature tied to Indigenous folklore, isolated cabin, ominous whispers. I was ready for the chills. And then... the chills turned into full-on eye-rolls. This book was like watching the same horror scene on loop. The monster jumps out, the characters freak out, rinse, repeat. By the time I hit the halfway point, I wasn’t scared, I was just praying for something new to happen.
Now, let’s talk about the whole Indigenous folklore angle. This could’ve been such a cool way to explore culture and history, but instead, it felt like the author Googled “Indigenous horror tropes” at 3 a.m. and just threw them into the plot. The creature felt like a random mishmash of cultural elements with no real depth, and the characters? Well, two out of the three Indigenous ones get killed off while all the white folks stroll off into the sunset like nothing happened. Super uncomfortable. It felt less like respectful storytelling and more like, “Let me cram in all this knowledge so I can use it to make my monster scarier.” And honestly? Not a fan.
In the end, the concept was solid, but the execution was all over the place. If you're looking for a book that’ll actually make you scared, you might want to pass on this one. But if you’re in the mood for a lot of repetitive ghost stories and a lesson in “How Not to Handle Indigenous Culture,” then Stolen Tongues is your vibe.
