This book started out SO promising and actually made me uneasy. As it progressed, it became extremely repetitive. The same things were happening over and over with no developments and the mystery behind “5” was the biggest let down.
After I finished it, I just wondered what the point was. All in all, this had so much potential to be a truly horrific tale, but it just wasn’t well-rounded enough. It was like the story was made up of puzzle pieces that sorta kinda fit together, but it ends up just pissing you off because the pieces didn’t fit well enough.

4.5 ⭐
The sheer terror I felt reading this book was unlike anything I've ever experienced reading a horror! The creepy atmosphere and unrelenting dread caused a permanent pit of anxiety in my stomach, and I was constantly uneasy.
I loved this so much. The prologue was so good and drew me straight into the terror. The story itself was so interesting; the way in which it was told, the setting, the constant barrage of terror, the mystery, all worked so well. I was never not on edge.
This was everything I hoped for in a horror and I've never enjoyed more being so scared. It was unsettling and creepy in the best way.
Usually when I watch horror movies, etc. the fear evaporates as soon as it's over and is forgotten about, but this one stayed with me every time I put it down. It was chilling, give me the shivers and I was genuinely scared to go to sleep last night!
Some negatives however, the ending felt really anti-climactic and after such a tense and terrifying build-up it fell short for me. The reasoning behind everything made no sense, as did the resolution, and was underwhelming. I was really disappointed, which knocked my rating down from 5 stars (even though it's technically rated as such but shh).
I also don't think Faye was well-written. Despite being obviously necessary for the plot, she didn't really contribute anything else to the story. She felt really flat as a character and annoyed me if I'm being honest.
There were also some unexplained plot points that were just completely forgotten about, which again left me a bit disappointed.
However, despite my complaints, with how much this book terrified me for a good 80% of it, and how quickly and easily I devoured it and couldn't put down, I would still say that this has become one of my favourite books. I would highly recommend!

Gosh, that was pretty terrifying. I had to take little breaks in between the scariest parts, I couldn´t handle them. These people were continuously harassed - on, and on, and on - and it wasn´t stopping! I had no idea how they were going to survive.
Felix, my man, I don´t have your determination. I think I would´ve left in like... the third night, no matter how cute the girl.

Well written, but the plot was too basic
I really felt that this book could’ve been condensed into a book half its size…What’s there is well written and certainly very atmospheric and creepy, but the plot feels like it’s stretched to the absolute limit most of the time. I felt that it quickly fell into the same pattern of exposition-introduce new character-creepy stuff-repeat, over and over again.
I enjoyed it but did find myself wishing it would hurry itself up throughout most of the latter half unfortunately.

I give Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell 3.25 stars out of 5. While it may not be a perfect novel, it’s a worthwhile read and a commendable expansion of the original Reddit story that captivated readers online.
One of the novel's strengths or weakness depending on how you look at it is its commitment to slow-burn horror. The pacing might not appeal to everyone, as it takes its time building tension and atmosphere, but for readers who enjoy a gradual, creeping sense of dread, this approach works effectively. The payoff is satisfying when the action finally happens, and the earlier sense of unease makes the climactic moments even more impactful.
I particularly appreciated the portrayal of The Imposter creatures. Though I’m not typically a fan of supernatural entities, I found these creatures to be both chilling and engaging. Their presence is unsettling in the best way, and they left a lasting impression as some of the most creative elements in the book. The creatures brought a unique flavor to the story that was both creepy and surprisingly fun to read.
Overall, Stolen Tongues is a solid horror novel that I would recommend, even to those who have already read the original Reddit story. While it might not break new ground in the genre, it expands on the original material in ways that make it worth picking up. For fans of atmospheric, psychological horror, this is for you.
