Deep in the Heart of Trouble is the second book in Essie Spreckelmeyer’s journey—the one where she finally finds her happily ever after. Watching her fall in love with Tony Bryant Morgan was an absolute delight, and I especially enjoyed his endearing friendship with Mrs. Lockhart and their shared love for romance novels.

What made this book stand out was Essie herself—a heroine way ahead of her time. As the leader of a velocipede (early bicycle) group in Corsicana, Texas, she is fiercely independent, preferring fishing, shooting, and riding over the idea of marriage, especially after a painful past experience. But when Tony arrives, her life is turned upside down in the best way.

This story had everything—humor, adventure, romance, and a heroine full of spunk and determination. The romance was sweet and slow-building, with Essie’s hijinks taking center stage and keeping me laughing from start to finish. It was refreshing to see a romance featuring an older heroine (six years older than the hero!) and how perfectly matched they were.

Rated: 4.0/5.0—With its charming setting, witty dialogue, and heartwarming romance, this book was a thoroughly enjoyable read. If you love strong female leads, historical romance, and lighthearted humor, you won’t want to miss Essie’s story!

Even though I thought Essie was left in a good place at the end of the first book, it was still nice to revisit her story in this sequel.

As always, I enjoyed the historical aspects of this story. I'm grateful the author took so much time in her research, even if not all of it was used in the finished product. And again I was appreciative of how realistic all the characters felt in the story. The trials they faced made them more relatable, and the quirks made them memorable.

These books have been wonderful to read and I'll certainly be looking out for more of this author's works in the future.

I would recommend this book to those who read the previous Essie book, as well as anyone who enjoys historical romances.

This book was also fun, though maybe not as fun as others of her books. I liked that it wasn't formulaic. The book took a few unexpected turns.

I can honestly say this is my favorite book by Gist! I was hooked from page one and loved it all the way through!

Sweet, fun story that is a quick read. I enjoyed the first book about Essie better but this one had a nice tidy ending to her story.

Extra silly, if that's possible. Not a fave, but not a bad distraction.
