Full of word play and puns. I really enjoyed it as an adult but I find myself wondering if children will get all of the puns and double meanings.

Not my favorite Avi book, but a neat little book on writing, and filled with great quotes for my next writing workshop for kids:

"My problem is that I don't know the correct way to write."
"There are many choices," said Edward. "You can go across the page, right to left, or left to right. Or, you could go up to down, or for that matter, down to up. Why you could even write diagonally."
"But I wouldn't want to write down to anyone," said Avon.
"It would be depressing," agreed Edward.

This was a cute book, but not quite what I expected. From the subtitle, I was expecting a book of writing advice and anecdotes, but it turned out to be a cute little book about two friends having an adventure with some writing involved. There were some wonderful nuggets sprinkled in the book, but if I had read the blurb before picking it up, I probably wouldn't have read it at all. It just wasn't what it appeared to be.

I like the first one a little better but it was still pretty funny. lots of puns and double meanings. Quick, funny read!

This was such a let down after the first one. I feel like the first was a story while this was a series of vignettes for writers. Perhaps if I hadn't read them back-to-back I would feel differently about this one. So for me, it was just "OK" hence 2 stars - maybe like 2.5. While the first book had a gentle humor with some word play, this packed in a pun or Abbott and Costello type word misunderstanding into basically every line. It was the word play equivalent of a fire hose versus a sprinkler. It felt like it was trying way too hard to be clever. I will say that if you're a writer, you will laugh with pain as Avon's writerly struggles hit far too close to home.

I really wanted to like it as much as I liked the first but I just couldn't.

It was kind of an allegory about writing, but mostly it was a collection of puns and wordplay that ranged from the painful to Shakespearean sublime. A lot of it was just what happens when grammatical words are taken literally. There were writing tips scattered throughout, with a few pages dedicated to the importance of proper punctuation (so be punctual). It's the kind of book you buy as a gift for a writer.

Honestly, this was like reading a conversation between my friend and I if we were even more ridiculous and were an ant and snail. It was adorable.

I cannot imagine what child, or adult for that matter, would enjoy reading this book.
