I truly wanted to enjoy this book way more than what I did because I found the premise pretty interesting, about how women created their own way to communicate through lace, however, despite the time the author takes to introduce each character, it ends up feeling extremely rushed and the contemporary story feels like an afterthought that doesn't really add to the plot besides showing some ideological stances of the author (which I share, but I feel like they interrupted the flow of the story in the past).
It also feels a bit weird that the first person narrator has so many knowledge about the events, but that can be forgiven because those chapters in the past end up being more engrossing. There's a constant use of slur against Romani people, yet it's fitting to the time the book is portraying (unfortunately).

Sendo este um romance onde temos duas linhas temporais diferentes, estava à espera de ficar interessado e investido em saber mais sobre cada uma.
Acontece que, infelizmente, a ação do presente não funcionou comigo. Ao contrário da do passado, que funcionou muito bem.
Para complementar, senti no final da leitura deste livro que a ação do passado poderia ter sido muito mais do que aquilo que é. Poderia ter sido mais bem explorada, fazendo com que o livro fosse mais longo, eliminando assim o sentimento de ter "sabido a pouco".
Em suma, para mim, poderia ter sido muito mais, uma vez que havia espaço e muita mais história desta família para ser contada.

Solid but sad story. This is an intergenerational story of femicide, domestic abuse, and the status of women. It's a tragedy, not a romance--so go in expecting that.
I wish the author had focused more on the historical storyline and confined the present-day bits to the intro and conclusion. I didn't like Alice or her mother, and the suspension of disbelief required to accept that some of these characters were appearing in 2010 at the age of 110 (or older) was questionable. By not trying to make both stories "work," the author could have done more to develop the historical characters, their friendships, motivations, etc. The aunt of Inês, for example, goes from zero to villain remarkably fast, and her motivations forstealing money and being underhanded about dismantling Inês's plans, rather than simply talking to her niece or sister were unclear. I also wasn't crazy about the fact that the 2010 story introduces a friend of Alice who's been a victim of some horrific domestic violence, only to have this "friend" never be mentioned again.
Overall, the book sometimes felt like more tell than show. I also have to downgrade it slightly for the conceit of the "gypsy" curse. In a book with strong feminist messaging, it felt discordant that this author would uncritically include such a harmful racial trope.
