An epically woven story with multiple POVS and a developing plot that slowly deepens as you read. This was a dark magic, not welded by witches but by a greedy, twisted, super effed up emperor. I enjoyed the wild tales and mystical creatures. The characters were complex and the whole concept was unique, at least to me as this is far from my normal genre. (Which may be evolving as I read and enjoy more fantasy/sci-fy) Book #85 in 2023

This was one of the most unique magic systems I've ever seen and I loved how dark it was. Jovis was wonderful and I so wanted him to find his wife, and of course Mephi was wonderful as well. I found myself having a hard time connecting with Lin as she didn't have as much of a personality, but her plot and unfolding the secrets was plenty interesting.

I really liked some of the ideas that this book has! With magic involving bones, constructs (chimera like creatures, and stuff involving memories.

I totally adore Mephi!!! He's probably my favorite character in the book and I have no idea what kind of creature he actually is. Reading about him and Jovis interacting was definitely my favorite part of this book!

Some of the sections left me confused, mostly all of the sections with Sand's point-of-view.

I actually enjoyed how the story has its dark spots, but not to the point that it is actually disturbing or nauseating like how I found certain parts of the Poppy War to be - that book left me kind of messed up (just finished the first book in that series and still don't know how to feel about it....)

(It's going to suck waiting who knows how long for the sequel!)

This started slow and I had a bit of trouble until the 25% mark being invested in the characters and that was probably due to the fact that we jump around to 4 different POVs. But once I was in I was IN! Lins POV gave horror vibes because whatever is going on in the imperial palace is weird! Bone shard magic system is so fascinating! Jovis was so likable and I would die for Mephi! I am excited to continue with the series!!

I would recommend reading, rather than listening. The viewpoint changes throughout, the names and nouns are unique, it would have been easier to read I think. But an interesting story, I will read the next in the series.
