i think hemingway is just one of those authors whose legacy will always be more interesting to me than his actual works

I gave this collection of short stories five stars. Hemingway was a pioneer in modern English literature. He wrote the pared down, absolute truth. I do not approve of hunting big game as sport. I believe his views of women were poor. Ernest Hemingway was a product of his time and social class. However, as a writer, he was a master of his craft. His war stories are most powerful to me, depicting and describing the absolute futility of fighting. As a young person, I found his stories "boring." I read the content--bullfighting, war, big game hunting set in hot, dusty, and barren surroundings. What is important, though, is the spare, precise use of words to express raw, naked truth. Hemingway stories and novels are to be read by mature, seasoned individuals.

I love how many of these short stories are set in Northern Michigan!

I couldn't finish this book. The racism in these short stories turned my stomach.

DID NOT FINISH

How the heck did Hemingway win both a Nobel Prize and a Pulitzer Prize? His stories read like a collaboration between a child first learning sentence structure and an old man with severe dementia trying to recollect his past. Being from Michigan, I was especially interested in reading "Up in Michigan" but 4 pages of an insipid woman and her eventual rape was pretty damn awful. Plus, what's with the dialogue? Did Hemingway never hear actual people speak? Seriously, nobody has ever, in history, spoken the way that his characters speak. And the female characters...dear lord. I'm sensing that Hemingway didn't care for women too much. Well, I tried. I'm really glad that I didn't have to read him in high school or college, though.

Anyways, rant complete. Thanks for reading!

I hate hate hate Hemingway's novels. Hate the "heroes." Hate the weakling women. Hate. The. Style. Hate.

I think I've made myself clear. So you can imagine my complete shock at absolutely loving his short stories. Hills like White Elephants was a positively feminist work compared to his novels. Many others are equally enlightened. The men aren't completely annoying/idiotic/drunk. Quite a few of the stories are beautifully brutal. They are written in his typically sparse style, but I am not irritated, as I usually am.

I can't believe I am going to recommend Hemingway, but I am. Read this.

[That only hurt a little.]

"God Rest You, Merry Gentlemen"

I must be missing something. I only enjoyed reading a handful of these. I normally love Hemingway, but I couldn’t get into most of the short stories.

yeah, I also want a cat. not just one though. I feel your pain woman, now stfu.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting to. Deep and entrenching look at the human experience mixed with wit and humor. The background explanations solid contributions as well.
