Wow, what a journey! I can honestly say this series is unlike any other that I’ve read before!
The world is so rich! You truly feel completely immersed!
This being booked two in The Tyrant Philosophers series felt completely different to book one, for one we got to hone in on a smaller cast of characters, so I had hoped that we would able to better connect with them. That being said, I don’t believe Adrian Tchaikovsky writes characters in a way where I can feel really close to them, leaving me quite frustrated at times!
Ultimately this world is so incredible! Learning about the history and just how vast everything is, incredible!
All the different people groups, extensive list of various powers, all the politics, lore, religions….. I mean come on!
It’s truly like we’re learning about a long lost world, everything is just so well thought out.
Why wasn’t this book 5 stars for me? I’m not sure, probably because I didn’t feel extremely connected to the characters but for me five stars is a feeling so it’ll set at a 4 1/2 star book.
I can’t wait for the third in the series to be released!
Ps one of my only little irritants throughout the whole book was the author kept telling us over, and over, and over how BIG Butcher is, like come on… I think we got it by now. A small thing, but I wondered if it bothered anyone else 😅
PSS the ending is odd, was it too much to ask to keep the band together??? It didn’t feel like it fit the rest of the book very well. also, I really hope we get to learn more about butchers kid/not kid.

There’s not much to say here that I haven’t said for Book 1. I really like the idea behind this book theoretically, but reading an epic (military focused) fantasy with such a high number of perspectives gets very frustrating. At some point, rather than serving the or any thematic purpose, some parts and perspectives felt included to superficially add ‘complexity’ to the novel. I found this to instead simply add unnecessary and gratuitous bloat.

I have read and loved many of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s books, but this one was a struggle for me. It moved slowly until the very end and it was dark and gory. All in all, I found it to be a depressing read.
Even though I had 0 expectations, I’ve been very positively surprised. Tchaikovsky’s books are like a puzzle: all pieces to guess the ending are there, you just have to put them together.
I obviously didn’t, hence the surprise

Quite different from the first book. It's really only a sequel because of Yasnic (Maric Jack) and the Pallaseen Empire. As others have described, this is basically MASH in a fantasy setting with magic. A fun read but it did take me a while at 600 pages long. Fantastic cover art again to match the first book.
