Bleeding and pustulous. Satisfyingly grim, if a touch too bleak for me. But that’s grimdark innit.

I really enjoyed this sequel, even more than the first book because it has more of a focus on one group of interesting characters

Colonial war from the field hospital. With gods and ghosts.

Tchaikovsky seems to use up the best parts of his imagination in the first book of the series. If you want more fantasy, less horror and a much cleaner plot this is a title for you. I'm less interested in the horrors and injustices of colonialism. I was fascinated by all the Weird and uncanny. Tchaikovsky has a brilliant imagination for it. Maybe one day I'll find a series of his where he didn't reign it in so hard.

Loved it, despite characters suddenly changing in order to to get to certain plot beats. The ending was disappointing, and felt rushed. But for 3/4 of the book this was a 5/5.
