out of all suzanne collins’ work it’s good i love her writing and her world building. this is just not one of the best ones. the last time i read this was in 2013 and it was good then obviously i was starstruck just like everybody else. i just finished ballad and then sunrise tho, and so everything is just a little more,,,depressing to think about. the first time we see haymitch, he’s drunk-major ouch. any deniability we had that surely the Capitol wouldn’t use their real eyes went right out the door after finding out what happened to Lou Lou and Louella. Katniss being a sweetheart is different too. Katniss is a funny narrator. she’s so 16.

Revisiting this series for the first time since about 2012 and the first one does stand up to a re-read, though if I’d already aged out of the YA demographic back then I’m definitely beyond it now! Collins does a good job of writing characters who are flawed in compelling ways, and I like her pacing of action scenes. The love triangle aspect is one of the weaker points for me and I do wish there was more worldbuilding for Panem, but overall still a reasonably absorbing book that can easily be read in one go.
