Ruta Sepetys has yet to disappoint with her novels. I went into this one only knowing it was about Spain, but I fell in love with her transportive writing and storytelling. Daniel and Ana's stories are seamlessly tied together in 1 month in Spain that carries a life time. The historical aspects of Spain were heartbreaking, but so interesting to learn about. I could not put this book down and it has made me curious to read other books about this topic. I loved this book even though it was hard to read about at times. I highly recommend this historical fiction novel and this author in general.

More like 4.5. Like all her other books, there were so many characters to have to keep up with, sometimes it makes the story too long. In her other books, I’ve felt distress and heartache the whole way through. I a credit that to the way the author writes. But with this one, while part of the topic (baby stealing and adoption) was a difficult one, I didn’t feel it in the writing as much.
But what I did love about the book, Daniel and Ana’s relationship was fun, Fuga and his premonitions was intriguing and heartbreaking, learning about Spain’s tragic and twisted history, and the somewhat happy ending. Ruta Septys is a fantastic storyteller.

I enjoyed this story, though it moved slowly and didn’t really hook me until halfway through. I think Septys does a great job writing historical fiction for young adults. Her books leave me wanting to research the histories of their settings.
