I remember after watching The Phantom music, my then-boyfriend-now-hubby decided to see who would finish the book first. I was reading through it fast and furiously because I had to win. Of course he won! ;)

The Phantom of the Opera is a story to watch and a beauty to behold in the theatre. It does not lend itself too well to the written word but I gave it 4 stars because I want to show my appreciation to Gaston Leroux for brining us the story that became an amazing musical with unforgettable music. And it's a beautiful quick read too..... but one must watch it in the theatre as well.

*picks jaw off the floor* *puts the phantom of the opera on the shelf of my favorite classics*

starts off a bit of a slog but gets so good. i think this is one i’d love a lot more on on a reread

Notes:
- I love this story so so much. It's Gothic, it's got distinct emotions through its cast of characters (shame, fear, obsession, kindness (or pity?)), and it's funny.
- There's something so achingly sad about Erik's obsession with Christine, and her inability to completely turn away from him because of the magnitude of it. "How can I hate him, Raoul? Think of Erik at my feet... He lays at my feet an immense and tragic love"

- I love Raoul so much. All he does is cry, and yet I still love him.

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux is a free Netgalley ebook that I read in late November.

The legendary threat of an opera house's ghost, yet, compared to productions I've seen, the lesser chorus cast of the book are generally a band of pompous, bickering, weenies, yet they shrilly skitte away at the mention of ghosts. There's also a lot of correspondence going on between theater managers and casting directors, a hasty infatuative, dramatic courtship goes on between Raoul and Christine, her spooky longing for both Erik (aka the Phantom), a B-level plotline of large amounts of money changing hands, and the rescue of retrieving Christine safely from Erik's clutches.
