Das Manuskript

I have to say, I didn’t see a lot of the twists and turns coming. Whole book written over the course of one day, with some flashbacks. Was very blasé about killing so many characters, which is not something I expected.

Good story but a few too many characters and a lot of bouncing around. I had a hard time following it some.

Interesting concept but too slow for me. I wish it had been a tighter, faster read. Enjoyable but could have been executed better.

The Accident by Anonymous. It's the kind of manuscript every agent dreams about, every editor wants to acquire, and every publisher wants on their list. But this particular manuscript also places everyone who reads it in almost certain danger.

Isabel understood that having the manuscript in hand would be a risk. After staying up reading it all night, she immediately contacted a trusted agent who turned around and pitched it to his boss at McNally & Sons. But as quick and careful as they were been, someone already knew they'd read it; all of them have been under tight surveillance for quite some time. See the manuscript in question is a tell all biography about Charlie Wolfe, a media mogul with the highest connections and an eye on future political office. The details outlined in the book would ruin the man and have far reaching effects. Which of course means the book will be a big hit if it ever makes it to print but only if those involved can stay alive long enough to make that happen.

After having read and loved Chris Pavone's debut, THE EXPATS, I have to say that I was greatly anticipating a new release from him. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that THE ACCIDENT was set in the publishing world, though. Squee!

My one teeny tiny issue was the way the revelation about the author played out. I doubt any reader will have a hard time figuring out who Anonymous really is and I was actually a bit confused about why Pavone dragged out the official reveal so long. There are clues peppered throughout the book and a pretty big tell about halfway through that's almost impossible to miss. And yet we had to wait almost to the very end for confirmation. It didn't necessarily add or take away any of the suspense in wondering or knowing, but it is what it is. Just something that I pondered while reading.

In all other ways THE ACCIDENT fully lives up to the expectation set by EXPATS (and we get a little return to Kate here, too). It's a one sitting read for sure and a tightly plotted, well executed thriller that's smart and packed with tension.

I STRUGGLED to finish this book. So many good reviews--could I be wrong?? I finally gave up and skimmed thru it. I was bored to tears.

This seemed more scattered than The Expats. I missed having a sole main character.

Excellent page Turner...If I could this would be 4.88889 stars...great read!

A real page turner. I preferred this one to 'The Expats'

Set up as a 300page thriller taking place in less than 24 hours, "The Accident" should have packed enough plot twists and action to entertain me.
Well, it didn't.
The two "reveals" of the story were pretty obvious from early on, the ending was a let down, and I found myself wishing I could read the manuscript the book was based around, rather than the book itself.
Pavone has harnassed the no-frills, prose-free style of the giants like Patterson. However, this book idea should have been shelved - it just wasn't that good, bro.

This book has a great pacing and it reads like a very good movie. I kept reaching for it even though it was well past my bedtime or I had things I needed to do ASAP. Then why am I rating it 3 stars?

Because of two things:

1. Male Gaze! So much male gaze! And the moment the story got going, the female POVs all but disappeared, too. Before that, though, they always saw other women as competition or thought of them in very sexual terms that are not the norm for straight women.

2. The translation (I read the Brazilian edition of this book). There wasn't anything big and glaring, but there were little mistakes here and there that really pissed me off. As a former ESOL teacher (and an occasional translator), I notice these things right away and I can't not see them! So that was annoying and pulled me out of the story every damn time.

Having all said that, I feel 3 stars is the right rating.
