The cover drew me to this book. It was a slow start but then really took off. A really great duo of writers.

I knew from the premise that this was going to be a book I'd enjoy, and I was SO right. Pre-earthquake San Francisco was a booming, exciting place, and the authors really capture the sense that anything is possible, all with the impending knowledge (not of the characters, mind you) that there's a disaster on the way.
San Francisco's Chinatown and the struggles of being a Chinese immigrant or a Chinese-american aren't exactly front and center, but they're very present. This was a bit of a complicated time to be an immigrant in the U.S., and the blatant racism is painful to read about.
The story, however, isn't at all sad despite the hardships the characters go through, but rather triumphant much like the rise of San Franscisco after the disastrous quake. There's love, friendship, loyalty, bravery, courage, and beauty all mixed together with a thrilling mystery rife with hidden secrets.
All in all, recommended for fans of American historical fiction, Chinatown and chinese culture, women overcoming the odds, disaster survivors, and bad people getting what they deserve.

Historical fiction with badass women as the main characters? I'm in! I enjoyed the weaving of the protagnists' stories that came crashing together at the climax. I did think that the story post climax dragged on a little longer than necessary, but I understand the urge to explore the continued story and the search for justice. Overall, I enjoyed it, and the joining of two authors' voices worked seamlessly here.
I'm just not invested in the characters.
