Trope: grumpy x sunshine; he fell first and harder; slow burn; dark past; afraid to commit

Interesting concept and I was excited to start reading it, but honestly this was a flop to me. Elemental magic and trials are usually things I love in books, but this one just did not hit for me.
the trials weren't exciting because they were all things that were pretty impossible and were only accomplished through luck and no skill of her own. I enjoyed her having magic healing powers at the end, but her being the rebel princess pissed me off, because where was the foreshadowing???? Not everyone needs to be a rebel princess to a lost kingdom, I liked her better as just a random girl who suffered to shitty circumstances.

I also felt like her internal monologue was so extensive in the middle of conversations. I would forget what the actual conversation about because shes been thinking for like 4 pages. It's giving Joe from "You".

Final beef: lots of examples of telling instead of showing.

It would’ve been a five star if not for the ending because what the fuck. The plot line was gorgeous and I love the building, the writing was very well done and I love the characters. I want to say that Kiva was one of my favorites, but you cannot betray my boy like that.
