I know this author can write beautifully. After all, this is the author who wrote Bridge to Terabithia. However, the quality of writing is so far from Terabithia that it's almost as if someone else wrote Lyddie. I read it with a 6th grade student who constantly asked, "Wait. What happened?" It's hard to separate the character's monologues versus thoughts, and many of the historical details are not well explained. Although the plot can be interesting if you can follow along, it's not worth the time it takes to read it.
