Picked this up at Unabridged Bookstore on a recent pillage of their sale section. Always love learning about new to me authors and experiencing and being inspired by their passions. I finished the story a couple weeks ago but finally got to finishing the extras at the end. Overall fun and compelling thriller (even as I felt conflicted about their actions at times). Good for summer and Pride season. Loved learning more about Venice and the silver and art worlds. Loved the swirl of supporting characters as well.

"A Beautiful Crime," a stylish, well-constructed thriller, opens with a murder in Venice and then moves backward and forward in time as the events preceding it unfold. At first, it may seem obvious who is dead and who killed him. By the time the story caught back up to that moment, I had four potential theories of the crime. Along the way, I was pleasantly distracted by details related to Venice art and tourism, the market for antique silver, several romances between gay men and a few sharp observations about living in New York City.

***-1/2

Ugh. Just not in the mood

Pretty good, although i felt the ending was lackluster. Loved the characterization and the twists and turns.

QUICK TAKE: A stunning crime caper with an LGBTQ twist. Set against the backdrop of Venice, Italy, the story revolves around Nick and Clay, a gay couple running from their troubled past to start fresh in Europe. However, in order to start their new life, the couple needs money, so they decide to sell a collection of counterfeit antiques to an unsuspecting American living in Venice who happens to have a complicated history with Clay. It’s part THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, part THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, and to say anything else about the story would spoil the fun. It’s “sophisticated and savage”, full of complicated characters and beautiful imagery; it’s stylish and sexy, but also packs an emotional gut-punch, and it’s the mix of high-stakes and heartbreak that really elevate this book above so many other titles I’ve read this year.⁣

A real page turner! The descriptions of Venice are lush.

It's fine. Too highfalutin. It got dry in the middle and kind of stayed that way.
