I like Alicia Keys and was very excited to read her memoir, but this one ultimately fell flat for me.

This book lacks depth. All of the stories gloss over the majority of the unpleasant moments or don’t dive very deeply into them, which makes the book seem inauthentic.

Additionally, I personally felt like there was a ton of name dropping in this book. Because she was mentioning people and not telling very relevant or in-depth stories, it felt more showy than important to the story.

I read this after hearing her speak as part of a work event. I really admire that when Alicia does serious homework around history and race in order to be knowledgeable for herself and her children. I strive to learn as much as she has both about those subjects and how they relate to me. I also admire her work ethic and commitment to her family. I can't say that this memoir blew my mind, but I enjoyed learning more about her and appreciate her music even more now.

This is really wonderful on audio because she plays music between chapters and has different people (Bono, Michelle Obama, Oprah, etc.) read their own reflections on meeting and working with Alicia.

I loved the back stories of how and why she wrote her songs. I love the joy she gets from her music and how it makes us feel when we hear it. I enjoyed reading it.

So here’s the thing, I like Alicia Keys, I think her music is fantastic, she seems cool, but I was not into this book. Everything about this book felt so surface level to me. There was nothing in the book that felt brand new to me. At one point, she describes the rules of The Voice, which I feel like anyone who paid for this book would know. She talks so much about her relationship with Prince but somehow it felt so impersonal. I wanted more depth from this book that I just didn’t get at all unfortunately.
