This book made me realise I am not a political memoir guy. But maybe you have to be really into the politician to enjoy their memoir. I am really not into Jonny boy. Why does this have to be so long man
John Bolton comes of as a self-important, pompous ideologue, which makes this book hard to read. Bolton comes off as a petty, sexist warmonger. And it reflects poorly on him that he joined the administration and stayed quiet as long as he did, to be sure. It's good he is bringing information about Trump forward and finally speaking out, but he will be forever stained by his strange and shameful conduct during the impeachment. And that he knew all this and felt the way he did makes his conduct in stonewalling the House even more questionable.
As a reading exercise, the self-importance and pomposity makes the book punishingly hard to read. I'd be hard pressed to think of a person who comes off worse in their own memoir. The level of detail is daunting at points, which makes it more credible, and it still could have used a more engaged editor. I know the point was to get the word out, but a slightly more readable and approachable book might have offered a wider audience.

Contextually vital in this post-45 administration. More factual than editorial.
I feel.... dirty. I already knew Trump was an unethical, lying, garbage human. All this book taught me is that Bolton knew what he knew and waited for a lucrative book deal to share it. He did not have a courage to come forward before a Senate committee or court. He's a traitor.

I got about halfway through this book before I finally had to throw in the towel and give up.
This book was so hard to read and painfully detailed. I had such a hard time following it. Thinking about writing a full review for the chunk I read exhausts me. There’s nothing relevant to read in here that we couldn’t have already guessed regarding Trump’s incompetence and the pure chaos behind the scenes.

Horrifying. Trump is dangerous and disoriented as a leader... How he can feel no shame for his behaviour is concerning...
informative
slow-paced
As with any tell-all, bts book, I ask myself two questions: 1) What is the motive for writing the book? 2) How reliable is the narrator? I won't presume to answer these questions for anyone else, but I do agree with other reviewers that Bolton comes across as a "the only way is my way" person. This is an unpleasant tome to read, in both form and content, and I am glad I borrowed it from a library instead of purchasing it. The book is poorly organized. Instead of choosing either a chronological structure or a topical structure, Bolton combines both, which results in a confusing mess. Sentences are convoluted, critical, and occasionally humorously snarky. Bolton writes as if the audience shares his depth of political background, so his text can be hard to understand. As for the content...I'll let readers decide for themselves except for two observations. What this text reinforces is that the issues that have plagued the US for decades will continue to do so for years more while gaining in complexity. What Bolton ceaselessly points out is that American bureaucracy is too slow, with every Department wanting more and more to fall under its purview.
Author is a enigma. A warmonger and a coward? He should live in infamy after deciding to not speak up during impeachment. Don’t give this guy any money or attention.

Absolutely boring; super dry writing style and much too difficult to keep track of all the past details given the fascism of the present administration. The first 35+ pages are comprised of Bolton being arrogant and talking about why he should or shouldn't take different jobs. Didn't finish and don't intend to. There are better books to spend my time with.
