I forgot to enter this book here when I began it 5 days ago. It will take me a while to write this as I consider this book by Trump's National Security advisor for 17m very very important. I also believe this is a courageous undertaking by this man. He is far from perfect and yet he is a man of high principles. Rigid man too...
John Bolton is a very detailed man and was certainly during his 17 months as Natl Security Advisor to T was keeping extensive notes. One conversation he quotes with T who says something about when he writes his book so it was known he was doing this.
This is an important book for our history. And we must ask Who is John Bolton? The man could have made a huge difference to our history our legacy and he didnt... Instead he was like a mouse running up and down the tunnels and periodically poking his head out not really liking what he saw and yet continuing to seek the cheese
For me aside from my personal views of this president we have a picture of a man who god is Image. The image he seeks for himself is similar to KJU and PUtin and Erdogan.
I have taken out many lines from this book
after he listens to recording of Ukraine call he is asked if that was why he resigned -
"the call was not the keystone for me but simply another brick in the wall"
"these people (T and Kushner) has an attention span no farther than the deal in front of them"
Guliani - a hand grenade that is going to blow everybody up
T - lack of constancy and resolve
"there was no stopping T from revealing himself"
What is important to me in this book is not Bolton himself rather what he reveals about this Presidency and its characters

Excellently crafted and easy to read. But still a war-monger that injects opinion where a military-man could. "We would have but pacifists did this instead" type of banter. However, it is yet an eye-opener into the Trump White House and his constant fumbles and miscalculations.
I got about halfway through this, and couldn't continue. The sheer audacity and hubris.
For all those people who think Trump's behavior is no big deal, I dare you to read this book. I would have normally given this three stars, but I think it's important enough to elevate to four.
I strongly disagree with many of Bolton's views and policies and I find him very arrogant and condescending. I didn't want to give him my $$ so I borrowed the book from the library.
As much as I dislike his opinions, I do believe he is competent, thoughtful and capable and he believes in protecting the United States and its interests. The book is meticulously footnoted and with the amount of detail it appears everything is factual. Obviously when he makes assumptions about the way people feel or things they might have said in the background - that's his own conjecture and can't be footnoted. Because of the attention to detail, the book is long and tedious at times.
By the time you finish the book with the chapter on Ukraine, you realize that the whole Ukraine thing was almost meaningless. The real worry is that the commander in chief does not listen to his advisers, read the briefings, or pay attention to the details. He talks over people, insults world leaders, and thinks the US military should be paid by other countries to protect our own interests. He is dangerously incompetent and completely out of his depth.

This was an excruciatingly slow read about a topic on which I have tried to get many different perspectives. The writing droned on, providing a play-by-play on specific international policy and security issues— conversations captured on detail—but rarely done in a particularly insightful way. Bolton’s approach is self- congratulatory and just plain boring. Nothing new to be gained by reading this.
It’s actually frightening to dwell on the fact that the author of this book has been in high positions of power and influence in several government administrations. You have someone who seems to be borderline (or fully) exhibiting pathological tendencies influencing policy decisions of utmost importance. The fact that Trump was the voice of slightly-better reason regarding their disastrous Iran policy is all you need to know about the depths of this author’s unfitness for post. Most of the book boils down to mere bloviating and Monday-morning quarterbacking, shining the turd of his legacy while largely blaming others for his perceived policy wins and losses. The absurdity and mental gymnastics he displays in laying out his side of non-participation in the House trial is simply ludicrous. At the end of the day he simply seems to regret that he served under an obstinate ‘boss’ who wouldn’t listen to his ill-formed advice.
John Bolton is, and apparently always has been, insufferable. I agree with him on how dangerous and incompetent Donald Trump is, but Bolton is so full of himself that I just cannot get through this book.

slow-paced
Bolton doesn't paint himself in a very good light, IMO. He's very hawkish and if he had his way, we likely would have been at war with North Korea, Iran, and possibly Russia. As far as his portrait of Trump goes, it's no surprise to anyone paying attention. Trump is mentally unstable, stupid, and childish and should be allowed 4 more years.
