(4.5) Captivating. Bolton challenged my world view, compelling me to consider things from different perspectives than the lines of thought I typically follow. I appreciated the organization of this compilation and his authentic voice, particularly his sarcastic wit! It could be clunky in places and at times unclear, which I suspected might be purposeful and indeed his epilogue explains just that. Only one section (Venezuela) felt as if he was pleading, in excruciating detail, his own case, but he then stated as much. Moreover, this never felt disparaging but instead seemed an honest, straightforward accounting from his seat in the house. In fact, he made me ponder whether leaders such as himself have the responsibility to provide such an accounting.
I'm walking away a much more informed global citizen and critical thinker surrounding geopolitical events.

I'm refraining from giving this book a rating because I did not read it for enjoyment, but rather for elaboration on modern day happenings. The writing was descriptive and logical and it did not lack in any basic quality.
This book is kind of what you'd expect. Trump is diplomatically incompetent, tweets change whole situations, Trump gets played like a fiddle by Russia & China, Trump gets hung up on the same four topics over and over again. If I'd ever had a positive opinion of #45, it'd be gone now.
Off-topic, I'm tempted to slot this into my 'Dystopian' shelf.

In this book Lawful Evil complains about Chaotic Evil.
This is:
"Inside the Death Eaters: Dolores Umbridge's tell-all book about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named"
In 1861 John R. Bolton would have supported slavery because it was not prohibited in the constitution and because the USA benefited from it.
In 1861 He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named would have sold his daughter into slavery if he would have been able to benefit from such a transaction.

It's almost a book, I mean it's a boringly detailed account of how bad decisions were made with very little analysis or reflection. It is also remarkable how someone could remember the tiny details of trivial day to day conversations while at the same time missing the bigger picture. I'm glad his career is over and sorry I paid for the book.
John Bolton sucks. Both he and Trump should be prosecuted.
After 10 days of listening, I decided to DNF at 30%. It's probably an important book. It is full of A LOT of information and I enjoyed Bolton's commentary. But I found my attention wandering each time I listened, so I wasn't even learning anything new.
I was waiting months for my hold to be released from the library so I was initially excited to read/listen to understand better what happened over these past 4 years. The book wasn't doing it for me though. Maybe I'd feel different if I was physically reading it. Or maybe if I had read it sooner, closer to when it was published. But at this point, with him recently out of office, I realized I don't want to hear about him any more.
It's possible I'll give this another shot in the future. Maybe. Or, I'll just look for a spark-notes version.
On to better things!

Interesting read but no really surprising reveal of how Trump operates.
